What will teachers learn from the STEP UP CPD Training Program? – STTC CPD

What will teachers learn from the STEP UP CPD Training Program?

May 7, 2025

In the workshop, teachers will start by gaining an understanding of literacy within the Cambodian National Curriculum. They will explore the Backward Design approach, which assists in creating detailed curricula that align with the national curriculum. The focus will be on designing lesson plans that correspond to specific learning outcomes, selecting suitable teaching methods for their students, and implementing effective strategies for assessment and feedback.

Over the course of five days, participants will delve into the content of their lessons, engage in practice sessions within small groups, and make presentations to the larger group. This format will allow for reflection and feedback from both the instructor and the facilitator. The goal is to ensure that all STEM teachers thoroughly understand the lesson content and can effectively apply it in their teaching.

In an exciting initiative to enhance STEM education, a five-day workshop is set to equip Cambodian teachers with the tools and strategies needed to deliver impactful lessons aligned with the Cambodian National Curriculum. This immersive program focuses on curriculum literacy, lesson planning, and effective teaching methodologies, ensuring that educators are well-prepared to inspire their students.

First: Understanding Curriculum Literacy and Backward Design

The workshop kicks off with an in-depth exploration of curriculum literacy within the Cambodian National Curriculum. Teachers will learn the backward design approach, a powerful framework for developing detailed curricula based on national standards. This method emphasizes starting with desired learning outcomes and working backward to design lessons that meet those goals. Participants will gain insights into aligning their teaching with specific objectives, ensuring clarity and purpose in every lesson.

Second: Crafting Effective Lesson Plans

Over the next two days, teachers will dive into the art of designing lesson plans tailored to their students’ needs. They will focus on:

  • Aligning with learning outcomes: Ensuring every lesson supports national standards and fosters student growth.
  • Selecting teaching methods: Choosing engaging, student-centered approaches to make STEM concepts accessible and exciting.
  • Implementing assessment and feedback strategies: Developing tools to measure student progress and provide constructive feedback.

Through hands-on activities, participants will create lesson plans and refine them based on peer and facilitator input, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

Lastly: Practice, Present, and Reflect

The final days are dedicated to putting theory into practice. Teachers will:

  • Engage in small-group practice sessions: These allow participants to test their lesson plans in a supportive setting, experimenting with delivery and classroom dynamics.
  • Present to the larger group: Each teacher will share their work, receiving valuable feedback from peers, instructors, and facilitators.
  • Reflect and refine: Guided reflection sessions will help participants identify strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring they leave the workshop confident and prepared.

A Lasting Impact on STEM Education

By the end of the workshop, STEM teachers will not only have a deep understanding of their lesson content but also the skills to apply it effectively in their classrooms. The combination of curriculum literacy, practical experience, and peer collaboration empowers educators to create engaging, outcome-driven lessons that inspire the next generation of Cambodian STEM leaders.

This workshop is a vital step toward strengthening STEM education in Cambodia, equipping teachers with the knowledge and confidence to make a lasting impact. Stay tuned for updates on the incredible work these educators will bring to their classrooms!
